School of Accounting and Finance (SAFE)’s students participated in the FEB-SM Summer School between 23 May and 3 June 2022 at the Faculty of Economics & Business (FEB), Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Jakarta (UPNVJ), South Jakarta Indonesia. The program is a collaborative program under the staff and student mobility initiatives, Walailak University. It is designed to develop students from Walailak University and UPNVJ to be global citizens as well as originating future long-lasting collaborations from the student to institutional level.
On 31 May 2022, the SAFE and FEB students visited Mandiri Bank at Jakarta CBD as part of the summer school field visit. Mandiri Bank is the public and largest bank in Indonesia with its own Mandiri University. Mandiri University is located at central Jakarta and is the private university established exclusively to upskill and reskill Mandiri Bank’s staff members with free education.
Mandiri Bank is in the transforming periods, moving itself into a digital bank to suit its clients’ changing lifestyles (as high as 90% of the clients conduct financial activities via mobile phone application and e-Banking). Mandiri University then supports the staff members or ‘bankers’ to smoothly transition from their analogue to digital working environment, training and arming them with proper bodies of digital knowledge and skills. This initiative of staff training avoids staff lay-off by allowing the staff members to learn to grow, personally and professionally, and to work together with new generations of staff members who are familiar with digital skills. The endeavours and results from Mandiri University are aligned with the United Nations (UN)’s SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) of SDG4: Quality education, SDG8: Decent work and economic growth, and SDG10: Reduced inequalities, which has created an ongoing positive impact within Mandiri Bank and in Indonesia.
The students also joined the sharing session on ‘Digital banking, e-commerce and financial technology’ delivered by Mandiri Bank experts and training team, then applied the insight gained from Mandiri University to design the final project for the Summer School and as the references for their future careers in Thailand or in Indonesia in the next couple of years.
